Climatic

Experience Climate Change.
Shape the Future.
Tomorrow starts Today.

What is CLIMATIC?

CLIMATIC is a free, science-based role-playing game in which participants negotiate, cooperate and make decisions that shape a shared world from today to 2100.

Through simulation and interaction, climate change becomes something you experience, not just something you learn about.

From Climate Science to Human Experience

Climate change is complex because it involves different interests, unequal responsibilities and decisions whose consequences unfold over decades.

In CLIMATIC, participants step into this complexity. They represent citizens from fictional countries, each with different priorities, resources and influence. Together, they must decide how to balance economic development, social well-being and climate action.

There is no single winning strategy. The challenge is to act together in a world shaped by unequal power, competing interests and a changing climate.

Many voices. Different responsibilities. One climate.

How it works

Each team represents a country, and each player represents one of its citizens, with their own interests and degree of influence. Some countries carry greater historical responsibility; others face greater risks. Everyone pursues their own objectives - economic, social or environmental.

And the climate keeps score.

Play your part.

Use your influence, whether great or small, to support the choices that matter to your role.

Negotiate.

Make your voice heard. Build alliances and strike compromises between short-term interests and long-term goals.

Shape the future.

Respond to evolving environmental, economic and social challenges.

Reflect and act.

Connect what happens at the game table with climate action in the real world.

The essentials

15-35 players

From a small group or class to a large event.

3-4 hours of gameplay

A century of choices and consequences in one session.

5 countries, 6 citizen roles

Different contexts, priorities and responsibilities within one shared world. No two perspectives alike.

Grounded in science

CLIMATIC combines role-play, face-to-face interaction and a dedicated web application.

The simulation draws on IPCC-based pathways and reference scenarios from independent climate research, including Climate Action Tracker. Players’ decisions are translated into evolving emissions and economic outcomes, showing whether the world is moving closer to a low-warming future or towards more severe climate impacts.

The game does not offer simple answers.
It makes trade-offs visible.

Designed for discussion, not just competition

CLIMATIC is made to be played face to face.

Players discuss, disagree, make proposals and search for compromises around their country tables. The web application supports the simulation, but the game happens between people: in the negotiations, conflicts and alliances that shape collective decisions.

It is suitable for:

  • schools and universities
  • educators and facilitators
  • NGOs and youth groups
  • community organisations
  • companies and public events

Tested in the field

CLIMATIC has been developed and refined through workshops, pilot sessions and classroom activities involving schools, educators and NGOs.

It was created to make climate change more understandable, more discussable and more connected to the choices people make together.

Open & accessible

CLIMATIC is free to use in schools, communities and other non-commercial settings under a Creative Commons license.

You are welcome to share it, as long as you credit its authors. For translations, adaptations or commercial use, please refer to the guidance on the CLIMATIC website.

Real Stories, Real Futures

Arcipelago-19

Climate change is not only a future scenario. It is already part of our reality.

In CLIMATIC, players encounter news reports from possible futures. Yet the images they see are real: they were taken by the Arcipelago-19 collective and document events from our recent past.

Some of the futures explored in the game are already happening.

We are already here.

About

CLIMATIC was conceived in 2022 by Andrea Turolla and Gaia Pani, environmental engineers working in academia, as an independent initiative exploring new ways to communicate climate change through participation, dialogue, and shared decision-making.

It was subsequently developed in 2026 as part of GAME ON for Climate Action: Engaging Students Through Role-Play & Activism (2025-1-IT02-KA220-SCH-000357540), an Erasmus+ funded project coordinated by Istituto Oikos in collaboration with schools and organisations from Italy, Bulgaria, Spain, and Slovenia. The project empowers secondary school students to develop concrete forms of climate activism through role-playing, training activities, collaborative projects involving students and teachers, and international exchanges. GAME ON also provides teachers with innovative educational tools and resources to bring climate education into the classroom.

CLIMATIC development team: Andrea Turolla and Gaia Pani (concept and scientific development), Margherita Aiesi (project coordinator), Manuela Nebuloni (editorial review and intellectual property protection), Giorgio Berti (editorial review and IT support), Roberto Boldi (software engineer), Valentina Bigaran (art direction and graphic design), Tommaso Puccioni (motion design).
